It's important to be reminded that social programs, like Early Head Start, really work and are important to fund. Julia is a model American, and her story shows that a combination of grit and support can move someone from poverty to a working class life. And her children I imagine will have even more opportunities.
As I wrote and did some light investigations about city and county services I was surprised at at the tremendous good that organizations are achieving. For example, Boces--originally established to supplement programs in high schools--offers a wide range of necessary, free programs like education in the trades, literacy, preparation for the GED and so on. There is a lot available and good people providing these services. They are unsung heroes.
Marlena, I look forward to reading your stories of inspiration. Persistence in the face of obstacles and compassion from those who offer support speaks to our humanity.
Thank you, Carole. One of the things that struck me about this conversation with Julia are the numerous forms of assistance that the state of New York offers to its constituents. There are many good people and organizations reaching out to include us all in the story of the state.
Muy linda historia, Malena
What a beautiful story. So many people take immigrants for granted.
Roy, I am hoping with there conversations to help us see one another as full human beings.
Thank you Henry!

“I had arrived in this country without family, with a different language and culture. Eso choca.” Perfect summation of the immigrant experience.
Great interview! You do a wonderful job of asking the questions that will bring out the essence of their stories. Julia seems like a beautiful soul.

Amazing perseverance but also what lkuck to find such kind employers.
This is so beautiful. Thank you. Meditating on her use of the words “complete, realizada.” What an inspiration. A ray of hope.
What would make you, me, feel realizadas?
What a great interview. And what wonderful words to do and say each day - "I did something good today."
Yes, Patty. Julia's positivity is wonderful--and contagious.
