It's important to be reminded that social programs, like Early Head Start, really work and are important to fund. As I wrote and did some light investigations about city and county services I was surprised at at the tremendous good that organizations are achieving. For example, Boces--originally established to supplement programs in high schools--offers a wide range of necessary, free programs like education in the trades, literacy, preparation for the GED and so on. There is a lot available and good people providing these services. They are unsung heroes.

“I had arrived in this country without family, with a different language and culture. Eso choca.” Perfect summation of the immigrant experience.

Great interview! You do a wonderful job of asking the questions that will bring out the essence of their stories. Julia seems like a beautiful soul.

Marlena, I look forward to reading your stories of inspiration. Persistence in the face of obstacles and compassion from those who offer support speaks to our humanity.

Thank you, Carole. One of the things that struck me about this conversation with Julia are the numerous forms of assistance that the state of New York offers to its constituents. There are many good people and organizations reaching out to include us all in the story of the state.
