There is a huge difference in the experience of people who came for fear of persecution vs those who came to establish businesses vs those who came for political reasons. Did they cross the Rio Grande swimming or did they arrive in a commercial jet plane with lots of luggage.
Absolutely true - though sometimes a multiplicity of reasons apply. The term is really an amalgam of many things. It has traditionally been used to describe people who arrived from any Latin American country with a great diversity of backgrounds, color of skin, economic status, and is morphing into an deeply felt identity within the United States.
