I tip my hat to Angie Cruz for her new and luminous novel, How Not to Drown in a Glass of Water.
Cara Romero has lost her long-time job at a lamp factory in New York City and qualifies for pre-vocational training with a job counselor, where, instead, she tells the story of her life. Cara Romero, Dominicana, has made many mistakes, but no matter how difficult her life is, she’s found a solution to her problems.
I can imagine Cara Romero in a one-woman play, or with her own TV series, or in a movie with her name. But I can’t imagine surpassing this nuanced and inventive telling in a book.
How Not to Drown in a Glass of Water was a New York Times Editor’s Choice and Notable Book and has been wonderfully reviewed everywhere—as was her earlier book, Dominicana. Angie Cruz is a star.
Here is a link to a conversation with Angie Cruz that will happen this Wednesday evening, online, sponsored by The Transition Network and hosted by Harriet Shenkman. Pre-register if you are interested. I’ll be there on the sidelines listening in.
